OVERVIEW
Ballet & Books is a national nonprofit closing the literacy gap through a hybrid of dance and reading. Its free, volunteer-led program pairs college-student mentors with young children (ages 3–9) for early literacy intervention. As the program grew across regions, its lesson materials, waivers, and student records lived in scattered forms and spreadsheets with no shared home. Tech for Social Good partnered with Ballet & Books to build web portals that bring it all together for the three groups who keep the program running.

CHALLENGE
Everyone in the program needs something different from the same system. Admins oversee volunteer agreements and waiver submissions and monitor every mentor and mentee; college-student mentors juggle weekly lesson schedules, materials, and their students' forms; and parents need to upload waivers, view lesson plans, and follow their child's progress. The existing site was built on messy HTML/CSS with data spread across separate tools. So how might we give each group its own tailored portal while keeping everything connected to Ballet & Books' main site?
WHAT WE DID
We designed and began building three role-based portals, one each for admins, mentors, and parents, mapped to how each group actually works. Admins and mentors get a dashboard with to-dos and progress tracking, training videos, curriculum, documents and waivers, student views, and a regional calendar for scheduling classes and deadlines; parents get a simpler view focused on forms and their child's progress. We rebuilt the project on a cleaner foundation, moving from messy HTML/CSS and Firebase to a Next.js, Tailwind, and AWS stack in a fresh repository, and produced a full design system and site map so future teams can keep building consistently.
OUTCOME
Working prototypes and a complete design system for all three user portals, on a rebuilt Next.js and AWS codebase, ready for the next team to finish coding, refine the UI, and fit the wireframes to each of the three user types.
